In recent weeks musician, DJ/performer Lord Fascinator took over room 14D at the hotel. In a daring stunt, he will turn the space into a physical manifestation of his subconscious. Below, he reveals more about his creative process:
“The Fascinator Suite is a hotel room at The Carlton Arms in Gramercy NYC that I will be redesigning as a physical manifestation of my subconscious. It will be accompanied by a 24 hour looping soundtrack (also The Fascinator Suite) of original music that the guest can turn up or down but not alter.
I will be living at the hotel for 5-6 weeks fitting out my room whilst simultaneously creating the bulk of the music. The soundtrack will also contain all previously released Fascinator. The soft release of the 2nd album as well as other jams and projects including some Electric Smile Band, my forthcoming album of psychedelic lovesongs, a dance project called SexJedi and some demos from the unreleased 4th Children Collide album. Music will only be able to be heard inside the room. Music I have been creating in the hotel so far includes a range of ocean and space inspired ambient works “Lord Meditator”, some religious devotionals dedicated to The Church of Fascintology as well as the more cinematic “Soundtrack to an Imaginary Blockbuster”.

“I’ve engaged in several sessions with a therapist with the express intent of visualising my subconscious. Specifically, that space where ideas originate. In my case the most potent ideas tend to manifest themselves as songs and using mild hypnosis among other things we delved and kept coming to a place just after death. The death of a relationship, or of a part of myself when I’ve moved from a place or sometimes a person I’ve loved. A void is left with the subconscious rushing to meet reality, communicating in the abstract and desperate for actualisation through expression in the real world. I regularly found myself floating in the ocean, between two lands. Initially rudderless and helpless but as the sessions continued my vessel grew a sail. I could steer. Then, in a recent session, once my therapist told me the ship was my ego it dissolved and I found myself levitating in a blue haze, moving at will.
This is the feeling I want to convey to the guest.”
Come and take a journey into Lord Fascinator’s universe. The opening of the room will take a place on March 15th, 6 to 9pm as part of the group show ‘BLACK AND BLUE’.
